What does alabaster do that acrylic can't?
Alabaster is translucent the way skin is translucent. Light is absorbed and re-emitted through mineral veining that no two slabs repeat, so the fixture itself becomes the warm object in the room. An acrylic diffuser only hides the bulb; switch on an alabaster ceiling light and the ceiling stops being a surface with a bright hole in it.
What size ceiling light for a hallway?
12–14 inches in diameter, mounted flush. What are the most common flush mount mistakes?
- Undersizing. A 12 inch fixture in a 14 by 12 ft room reads like a button. Use length plus width in feet as inches of diameter.
- Cool bulbs. 4000K and above turns alabaster gray. Stay at 2700K to 3000K.
- Clear-envelope bulbs. A clear filament bulb prints its own shadow on the stone. Use frosted or opal.
- Skipping the dimmer. The veining is most visible at 20 to 30 percent brightness; without a dimmer you never see it.
- Wet cleaning. Gypsum spots permanently. Dry microfiber only.
How do you replace an acrylic flush mount with alabaster?
It is a 45 to 60 minute job on an existing junction box, with no new wiring.
- Switch off the circuit at the breaker and confirm with a non-contact voltage tester.
- Remove the acrylic diffuser and unscrew the old canopy from the junction box.
- Check the box rating. A standard US box is rated to 50 lb; alabaster flush mounts run 6 to 18 lb, so almost any sound box will take one.
- Fit the new crossbar, then match the wires: black to black, white to white, bare or green to the ground screw.
- Seat the canopy flush and tighten the finials evenly so the stone sits level.
- Install an E26 LED bulb, 2700K, CRI 90 or higher, frosted envelope.
- Restore power and dim to about 60 percent to see how the veining reads before setting a level.
If the home has aluminum wiring, no ground conductor, or a box you cannot inspect, use a licensed electrician.
