For an island, start with spacing rather than style. Two pendants suit an island up to about six feet; three works from seven feet up. Leave roughly 30 inches between fixture centres and at least six inches in from each end of the counter, and hang the base of each shade 30 to 36 inches above the surface so it clears sightlines across the island. Because island lights sit at eye level for anyone standing at the counter, a shaded or diffused fixture is usually more comfortable than an exposed bulb.
